NHC climbing trip photos - Sam's Throne trip

Sept 2-5 2004

Click on the photos to see the very large version. If you want to print these out, the large versions are high enough resolution to be printed into real photos. Lawrence photo in town does excellent prints from digital, just save them to a CD and have just the ones you want printed. Wal-Mart can do the same, expect about 20-40 cents a photo for good prints.

Yes, that's all Joe's gear...  good grief..... room for the sink too?

Slacking over the "pit" while waiting for everyone to show up.

Anthony playing. I'd like to see Buddha do that....  :)

Everyone showed up on time with all their gear and we were off.

A bit of scenery from the drive down.

As the highway blurs on and on.....

Oh yeah, watch out for that really big pot hole.

We got in a bit before dark, set camp and crashed fairly early. We did make time to walk down and do some awesome star gazing off the bluffs.

The next morning: gearing up

View of the camp - Jeff slept in the hammock

Suiting up to become a human wind chime

A quick shot of the "redneck pop up tent"

Finally, we're on an overlook in Sam's Throne.

Well I'll be..  there are mountains in Arkansas

Playing in the Catacombs - Everyone's first reaction: "They call that a walk down, where's the walking part come in?!?"

Joe setting Sliders (rated a 5.7) to teach basic technique on.

The catacomb from the bottom.

Amanda and Jeff posing before going up Sliders

Joe on the rap down.

Josh going over the tie in sequence - it's hard to forget the "choke and poke"

Amanda working her way up Sliders

And she gets past the crux (hardest spot).

Amanda topping her first route out successfully.

Josh doing some very well placed hand and toe jams; not bad at all for a first day out.

Going over a double check on belay.

Josh going exploring.

Jeff flying up Poison Ivy

Sitting down on the job.

We met a group of climbers that Joe had climbed with before, Matt, Paul, Anne and Martha, and climbed and camped with them that evening. They were nice enough to snap us some photos, set some routes for us and were pretty fun to hang out with.

The really big spider. I did some research and it appears to be a Shamrock Orb Weaver - which no one in the group had ever seen in that area before.

Hmmm...   almost close enough to jump across.

Setting a weirdly complex anchor due to lack of cams or nuts.

The end.
